Artist Ron Deviney is the reason I’m a graphic designer, book cover designer, and 3D stock art designer. Without him, I wouldn’t have a career in art and design.
Many centuries ago, before my first novel was published, I went rummaging around the Internet for information on how to use Photoshop, so I could figure out if I had the guts to make my own book cover—or, at the very least, some ad graphics.
Somehow, I stumbled upon the Daz3D.com website, and I had no idea what sort of products they actually sold on that site. I couldn’t understand the terminology (Genesis figures, 3D rendering, iRay engines, PBRs, HDRIs, etc.), but then I came across one of Ron’s Brush packs specifically designed for use in Photoshop. I was so new to design, I had no idea Photoshop brushes could be so, well, spectacular!
A Wide Variety of Uses
I should note that Ron’s brushes are ABR brushes, which means you’ll be able to upload them into any program that can handle ABR brushes, such as Photoshop, Procrreate, or Affinity. In addition, some of Ron’s brush packs include layered PSD files as well as tutorials on how to use some of the brushes and even (ASL) styles or toolsets. Every pack includes sometimes dozens to hundreds of brushes, so the sky is the limit on what you can achieve in your creative projects.

I know I’ve only scratched the surface of what I can do with Ron’s Flourishes, but my favorite thing to use these swirly doo-dads for is to add flourishes to typography on book covers. Adore them.

They come with a ginormous number of Gold Layer Styles, but I’ve also added a glow effect to these to embellish some Fantasy book covers too. So pretty!

I’ve used this pack in a few different ways. It’s great when you need to add actual lightning to an image, of course, but I’ve also used it to mimic the look of cracks in the desert, etc. It comes with its own set of layer styles to help give the lightning a sense of glow and realism, and the styles come in a variety of colors. I’ve applied those styles to the lightning, but I’ve also used them to create a glow effect on elements from other brush packs from Ron.

I probably use Ron’s Sci-Fi Optical Flares brush pack more than any others. I continually find more uses for them as time goes on. Obviously they are a perfect addition to things like Sci-Fi book covers and the like. But I’ve used them for social media graphics, layered over character portraits, and even as website elements.
I often pair them with some Photoshop styles I created that give them a nice ethereal glow, but I’ve also applied the styles from Ron’s Lightning FX brush pack too. LOVE them!
